Becoming a Leader

Ner Tamid is a synagogue that believes everyone has something important to contribute.  We not only seek out leaders, but we develop leaders in a warm and loving environment where people love to contribute to the best of their abilities and are cherished.  We form lay leadership teams around our priorities and challenges. Let us know where you can help

Our Board of Directors

Marisa Connell, President

Marisa Connell joined Ner Tamid in 2011, after relocating to San Diego from upstate New York. Immediately drawn to Ner Tamid, she and her enthusiastic now-10 year old daughter quickly became regulars.  Marisa and another member soon started our Rosh Chodesh women's group (questions? please contact her!) to grow the bond between the women of our community and - to be frank! - make friends. She is grateful for the people she has met at Ner Tamid and looks forward to meeting more as our kehillah grows. She previously served as VP, Education before being elected president in 2016. In the real world, Marisa works in program management at Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems. You can reach her at marisa.l.connell@gmail.com.

Mark Baker, Executive Vice President

Ann Spector, VP of Ritual

Shortly after moving to Poway in 1989, Ann and her family (husband, Andrew, and infant son, Sam) joined Ner Tamid to affiliate with a local, Conservative, egalitarian synagogue. She was recruited for the Board and has served as Recording Secretary, Ritual Committee member, Education Chair, Ritual Committee member, and Vice President. In addition, Ann served as Treasurer of the Ner Tamid Sisterhood which was an active organization until 2005.

Her son, Sam, attended religious school and became a Bar Mitzvah at Ner Tamid. Ann reads Torah and chants Haftarah and enjoys participating in Shabbat and holiday services.

Ann grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana. She received a B.A. in Drama from Washington University in St. Louis, MO and an M.B.A. from UCLA Graduate School of Management. She worked in commercial banking for several years in northern California before starting a family and relocating to Poway when her husband accepted a job in San Diego.

Myla Kelly, Recording Secretary

Myla is currently serving the Ner Tamid community as the Recording Secretary of the Board. Myla joined Ner Tamid Synagogue in 2004. Born in San Bernardino, California, she is a third generation native Californian. She grew up in Pasadena, California, completed her Bachelors degree at Point Loma Nazarene University, her Master’s degree at San Diego State University, and she has been married to Kenneth W. Kelly since 1977. Myla has served as the San Elijo Campus Librarian for MiraCosta College since 1988.

Sara Reisman, VP, Membership

Sara and her family moved to San Diego (for the second time!) in 1998 from Washington D.C. and joined Ner Tamid in 2002. Originally from Tucson, she attended the University of Arizona with a BS in Biochemistry and received a Master of Public Health/Health Service Administration from San Diego State University. After a few years working in hospital software, Sara "retired" to take care of their 3 kids - Maya (21), Jeri (18) and Jake (15). Ner Tamid has become such an important extended family to the Reisman family. Sara, along with her husband, Joe, and kids love to host a Ner Tamid party!

Debbi Gourley, VP, Outreach & Publicity

Doug Bergman, VP, Education

Doug looks forward to working with the Torah School leadership and the rabbi to generate excitement among students, parents, and the community about Hebrew and Jewish learning, and identify ways to keep teens enthusiastic about Ner Tamid and their Jewish identities beyond their bar/bat mitzvah year with USY and other programs. Our goal is to make the Bloom Learning Center a natural choice for Jewish education in San Diego county, and organically increase enrollment to a sustainable level.

Doug is currently engaged as mathemaperson at a small San Diego company focusing on voice biometric and computer hardware algorithms, and recently moved on to develop anatomic object recognition technology in x-rays.

Doug’s wife Nancy, a successful local realtor, served as chairperson for the Ner Tamid Annual Gala, raising over $50,000 at the 2018 event and is actively working on 2019.

Doug's proudest moments were his daughter Sammi becoming a bat mitzvah at Ner Tamid in 2018, and his son Levi making a double play at first base.

Diana Finkelstein, VP, Communications

Diana Finkelstein is one of newest Board members, having joined Ner Tamid with her husband, Sol, in 2015. Originally from Canada, Diana has resided in the San Diego area for almost 40 years, raising two daughters and acquiring two sons in law and one granddaughter in the interim. A retired nurse, she enjoys painting, reading, Mahjong and dining out. Seeing a need for an empty nesters group at Ner Tamid, Diana started a Gourmet Group two years ago which has been going strong ever since.
