Becoming a Leader

Ner Tamid is a synagogue that believes everyone has something important to contribute.  We not only seek out leaders, but we develop leaders in a warm and loving environment where people love to contribute to the best of their abilities and are cherished.  We form lay leadership teams around our priorities and challenges. Let us know where you can help

Our Board of Directors

Marisa Connell joined Ner Tamid in 2011, after relocating to San Diego from upstate New York. Immediately drawn to Ner Tamid, she and her enthusiastic daugher quickly became regulars. Marisa and another member soon started our Rosh Chodesh women's group (Questions??? Please contact her!) to grow the bond between the women of our communicty and - to be frank! - make friends. She is grateful for the people she has met at Ner Tamid and looks forward to meeting more as our kehillah (community) grows. She previsously served as VP, Education before being elected presidet in 2016. Marisa works in program management at Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems. She can be reached at

My name is Liliane Eichenbaum. I was born in Marrakech, Morocco to a Sephardic Orthodox family. After completing Pharmacy school at the University of Strasbourg,France; I emigrated to Israel and lived in Jerusalem, Natanya and Hadera for three and a half years. I speak French, Moroccan Arabic, Hebrew and English. After marrying an American in Israel, we moved to Saint Joseph, Michigan and became members of a conservative synagogue. I became VP of Ritual from 1996 to 2013. During that time, I also served as " Shlicha Tsibur" שליחה ציבורית  meaning leading services on Shabbat and festivals in the absence of the Rabbi.( During those years, we only had part time rabbis) I also taught Hebrew school and prepared children for Bar and Bat Mitzvah. In June 2013, my husband and I retired and moved to San Diego to join our two children and two granddaughters. Since then, we became members of Ner Tamid synagogue and I am now the VP of Ritual since January 2020

Max Ader, Executive Vice President

Max joined Ner Tamid in 2015.  Born & raised in Brooklyn New York, he moved here over 25 years ago, via Iowa.   Many congregants have met his  daughter, Bailey, her brother Myer, and his wife Debra at Friday night Kabbalat Shabbat. He is a scientist at Eli Lilly and a lifecycle photographer. He enjoys walking on the beach with the family dog, Peanuts, playing poker, and cooking. Ask him about his smoked salmon that might be at the next poker and schmoozing get together.  He can be reached at

Gary Abenaim, VP of Education

My wife, Negin and I joined Ner Tamid in 2018 because we were looking for a temple and a community that was warm and welcoming and where it was easy to connect with fellow jews. We were also looking for a place where our 2 children would learn about their heritage and make friends. We found exactly that at Ner Tamid. As the VP of Education, I am privileged to see our young members embrace their Jewish identity and their thirst for knowledge. I am originally from Canada where I was raised in a Morrocan Sephardic, french speaking household. My spare time revolves around sports, particularly tennis, hockey and golf all of which I still practice. San Diego has been my home for the last ten years.
