Some words in a Federation email recently caught my eye – because they resonated with something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately: leaving a legacy. When I am in this building, I feel the spirit of those who came before us, many of whom are now gone and some who sit among you. The names on the building, the names on the plaques, the faces in this crowd: they left a legacy. Since before I knew what it meant, hearing “l’dor v’dor” on a Saturday morning stirred something inside me.

So what were these mysterious words in the Federation email? "Our greatest responsibility is to be good ancestors." (Jonas Salk)

Jonas Salk was the son of Russian Jewish immigrants. Like many of us, he was born elsewhere (in New York); he was born to an immigrant family; he settled eventually in San Diego.  Like many of us, he thought about the future and what it holds for our children, grandchildren, and beyond.

So, what does this mean? And why am I talking about it now?
